Direct Care and Treatment (DCT) is a highly specialized behavioral health care system that serves people with mental illness, substance use disorders, intellectual disabilities, and other serious and often co-occurring conditions. DCT operates psychiatric hospitals and other inpatient mental health treatment facilities; inpatient substance abuse treatment facilities; special-care dental clinics; group homes and vocational sites; and the nation’s largest treatment program for civilly committed sex offenders. The system cares for more than 12,000 patients and clients each year. Because these individuals have conditions that are complex and behaviors that can be challenging, other health care systems cannot or will not serve them.
