The Endoscopy RN reports to the Director of Surgical Services, and works under the direct supervision of the departments Nurse Clinical Leader. He/she is responsible for providing direct care to patients undergoing procedures in Endoscopy.
The RN assures the provision of high quality patient care, utilizes equipment appropriately, fosters a cooperative and collaborative relationship with physicians, and establishes and maintains good internal and external customer relationships. The RN fosters a team approach to providing care that is safe, effective, patient centered, timely, efficient, and equitable. The RN performs all functions according to hospital policies, nursing standards of care, practice guidelines, and applicable regulatory and professional entities within the scope of RN practice.
Patient Population Served :
The Endoscopy Staff Nurse is expected to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical ability, intellectual development, psychosocial, education and safety needs of the pediatric/adolescent, adult and geriatric patient working within the ASPAN framework as is outlined.
Essential Position Functions :
The following functions must be able to be carried out by the incumbent with or without reasonable accommodation:
Assessment
Establishes a pre and post procedure nursing diagnosis.
Examines the patient physical status for baseline data information.
Reassesses patient status at designated time intervals.
Ensures thorough accurate documentation of pertinent data obtained during the assessment process.
Communicates patient care needs to the appropriate personnel.
Reviews pertinent test results including EKGs, labs and x-rays for ongoing assessment and reporting to physicians.
Planning of Care:
Develops a nursing care plan by eliciting patient physical and emotional concerns, listening attentively and providing a quiet environment conducive to all.
Coordinates interdisciplinary plan of care.
Develops teaching plans to meet the learning needs of patients, family, caregiver relevant to interdisciplinary discharge needs.
Implementation of Plan:
Applies the plan of care, monitoring for effectiveness.
Administers medication ordered and monitors for desired, side or adverse effects.
Assists the anesthesiologists/gastroenterologists and other healthcare providers in administering treatments and procedures.
Applies relaxation techniques and encourages patients to utilize this therapy to accomplish goals and facilitate the delivery of care.
Evaluating plan of care
Reviews and updates the treatment plan in collaboration with all members of the healthcare team, patient and family.
Communicates ongoing patient care needs to the discharge caregivers regarding discharge home care, prescriptions, follow up appointments, and anesthesia after care.
Accepts primary nurse role for assigned patients.
Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, families, staff and corrects hazards promptly. Adheres to hospital safety policy and procedure.
Documents all pertinent information on the patients medical record in an accurate, detailed manner adhering to standards for documentation.
Supports the department’s customer service efforts. Provides service excellence to patients and their families, medical staff, peers, support services and other hospital personnel. Provides immediate and satisfactory problem resolution for valid customer complaints or refers complex customer service problems to the nurse manager.
Assists the physician during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to promote optimal patient outcomes by team collaboration during endoscopy procedure.
Develops and maintains professional relationship with physicians, peers, patients, and their families and medical support services.
Follows the principles of infection control as outlined in the policy and procedure manual.
Participates in the department's performance improvement program by collaborating with the department's PI representative in developing and implementing effective PI programs.
Assumes responsibility for own professional development and ongoing education. Attends required hours of continuing education per year.
Demonstrates a commitment to containing costs and efficient use of material resources.
Attends staff meetings and mandatory department in-service.
Is dependable, punctual and does not abuse sick time.
Maintains patient dignity, privacy, safety and confidentiality.
Participates as a team member to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Non-Essential Position Functions :
Performs other duties as assigned or as judgment or necessity dictates.
Participates in hospital/unit committees.
