Position Summary:
As a member of the surgical team, assists surgeons and other staff in specialty service line cases throughout the operating room. Duties include anticipating the surgeon’s needs for procedures and instruments, maintaining sterility and transporting patients.
Equivalent to graduation from high school and graduation from an accredited program for surgical technologist or completed a training program administered by the United States Public Health Service, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard.
Minimum two (2) years of experience in a specialty service line Surgical Technologist role is required.
UMC is solely responsible for determining the applicable specialty service lines (e.g., Cardiovascular) that qualify under this classification.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Certified Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology (NBSTSA).
(UMC may hire candidates without an NBSTSA certification subject to the applicable exception(s) in NRS 449.24185; however, at their own expense, the new hire must obtain the Certified Surgical Technologist certification through NBSTSA within six (6) months of their employment).
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification accepted by the American Heart Association (AHA).
Preferences will be given to applicants who document the following:
Knowledge of:
Anatomy and physiology; microbiology; pharmacology; medical-legal considerations involved in patient care; infection control and sterilization procedures; surgical equipment, instruments and supplies; methods for draping patients; proper lifting techniques; environmental safety principles and procedures; variety of surgical techniques; body mechanics; a variety of equipment, varying according to specialty (video systems, YAG, carbon dioxide lasers and x-rays); department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and procedures; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures; age specific patient care practices.
Skill in:
Operating room procedures; setting up and restocking operating room; surgical procedures; identifying patient emergency situations and instituting proper response procedures; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time, strength to examine varied patients, vision to read printed materials and VDT screens, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in-person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
