The typical patient population found in the cardiac observation unit includes patients with diagnoses such as chest pain, cardiac dysrhythmias, NSTEMIS, as well as the occasional overflow patient admitted for dialysis, syncope, etc. Nurses working in this area must be competent regarding rhythm recognition as well as cardiac catheterization recovery, TR bands, etc. The nurse to patient ratio is 1:4.
