The Student Nurse LNA Extern Program is open to UVM nursing students who have completed their Sophomore year . Through a mentoring relationship with Licensed Nurse Assistants , Student Nurse LNA Externs are able to provide direct patient care under the LNA scope of practice . Externs will also receive observational learning experiences by working one-on-one with their LNA mentor/preceptor to a variety of different patient populations . The 2026 program starts May 11 and ends the first week of August.      Student Nurse LNA Extern s are per diem /temporary employees, which can allow for some scheduling flexibility; however, it is required that participants be available for the duration of the program and for the designated weekly hours , which will likely amount to full time (36 hours). POSITION SUMMARY Under the general supervision of an RN, the Nursing Student Extern performs selected duties pertaining to direct and indirect nursing care of the patient. Some examples of duties include performing treatment duties as requested by the licensed nurse, such as: application of slings routine patient feedings range of motion exercises assistance with ambulation complete and partial baths total personal hygiene care position and bed changes skin care assisting physicians with examinations The Nursing Student Extern also performs additional nursing tasks under the direct supervision of an RN outlined in policy.
