Performs a variety of laboratory tests, many of which involve numerous steps and techniques, and require use of professional judgment.  Tests are performed in Blood Bank, Coagulation, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Chemistry.  Professional application of the theories and techniques of clinical laboratory science (including evaluation of quality control data) are used to produce reliable test results which aid the clinician in diagnosis and treatment.  Has full access to patient health information. May have access to medication storage areas (excluding controlled substances) as related to job responsibilities. The Student MLT must have basic knowledge of test procedures and related disease processes, recognizing appropriate test selection and abnormal test results; comply with safety practices and ethical standards; follow procedural guidelines for quality control monitoring, computer applications, instrumentation trouble-shooting, and specimen collection/processing; prioritize work to maintain maximum efficiency and standard of care; assist with training and cost control; recognize technical problems/suggest solutions; understand life span growth/development to interpret data and provide age-appropriate care.
