Acute Care Surgeon - High-Volume Emergency General Surgery, Trauma, Critical Care & Elective Surgery
Join a high-volume, broad-scope Acute Care Surgery practice serving eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island
The Acute Care Surgery Division at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut, part of the Hartford HealthCare network, is recruiting a fellowship-trained Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Surgeon to join our established team.
Backus is an ACS-verified Level III Trauma Center and regional emergency general surgery referral center with a broad operative practice including a high-volume of emergency general surgery as well as surgical critical care, trauma, and elective general surgery.
For a surgeon who enjoys broad-based, "head-to-toe" general surgery, wants to remain highly operative, and would like the opportunity to develop areas of individual clinical expertise, this is an excellent ACS practice fit.

High-volume, high-acuity Emergency General Surgery. Our service provides trauma and emergency general surgery care for a broad geographic catchment area, serving the 400,000 people living in between the Connecticut River and the Atlantic Ocean. We serve as an accepting center for multiple hospitals throughout eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island. Our surgeons manage a broad spectrum of complex emergency general surgery and surgical rescue and individually average 330 cases per year.
Surgical Critical Care. Our surgeons lead the care of critically ill surgical patients with the support of 24/7 in-house experienced APP coverage. The SICU primarily supports the EGS and trauma service in addition to a consult service for subspecialty surgical patients experiencing critical illness.
An established chest wall injury program. Our ACS surgeons regularly perform VATS, thoracotomy, and surgical stabilization of rib fractures. Surgeons with chest wall injury experience can immediately participate in the program; partners interested in developing these skills will have direct mentorship and operative opportunities.
A robust abdominal wall reconstruction practice. Our group performs approximately 50 complex abdominal wall reconstructions annually using both minimally invasive/robotic and open techniques in addition to a substantial minimally invasive and robotic hernia practice . There is opportunity for an incoming partner to participate in and further grow this practice.
Robotics is integrated into our ACS practice. All current ACS surgeons perform robotic surgery in both emergency and elective general surgery. The group has access to elective robotic operating block time, and partners interested in developing robotic skills will have support and mentorship from within the division.
Meaningful opportunity to build an elective practice. Our ACS surgeons maintain active elective general surgery practices supported by a well staffed multidisciplinary outpatient team including 3 full time RNs and 2 full time APPs. An incoming surgeon will have protected opportunity to develop an elective practice aligned with their interests, including hernia and complex abdominal wall reconstruction, foregut surgery, colorectal surgery, chest wall surgery, endocrine surgery, or other areas of general surgical expertise.
A collaborative environment built around professional growth. We are intentional about mentorship and about helping each partner develop areas of clinical, educational, administrative interest. Current opportunities include trauma administration, quality improvement, chest wall injury, robotics, emergency general surgery, elective general surgery, critical care, and surgical education.
Opportunities for surgical education. Our division directly supports a systemwide Surgical PA Fellowship based primarily at Backus and hosts senior residents from the University of Connecticut General Surgery Residency Program for an immersive, apprentice-style rotation. Current surgical partners hold faculty appointments with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
Community-hospital breadth with tertiary-level support. Backus is supported locally by interventional radiology, colorectal surgery, ENT, neurosurgery, urology, orthopedic surgery, and other surgical specialties. As part of Hartford HealthCare, our team also has ready access to the resources of Hartford Hospital, a quaternary ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center.
The ideal candidate is board certified or board eligible in General Surgery and fellowship trained in Surgical Critical Care or Acute Care Surgery.
We are looking for a surgeon who is comfortable independently managing complex acute care surgical and critically ill patients while also valuing collaboration with supportive and experienced partners.
Experience in chest wall injury, robotic general surgery, or abdominal wall reconstruction is welcomed but not required. For an early-career surgeon, these are areas in which our group can provide meaningful mentorship and opportunities for development.
