Sanitas Medical Center is seeking an experienced and compassionate Palliative Care Medical Director to provide clinical leadership, physician oversight, and direct patient care for our growing Palliative Care Program in Miami, Florida.

Position Overview

The Medical Director is responsible for the clinical coordination and oversight of the Palliative Care Program, ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care and effective day-to-day clinical operations.

Working closely with the Director of Palliative Care Operations, Palliative Care Case Manager, physicians, advanced practice providers, and clinical staff, the Medical Director will oversee provider performance, quality of care, clinical policies, utilization, documentation, and regulatory compliance.

The role also includes direct patient care in the home setting and participation in the ongoing development and growth of the Palliative Care Program.


Key Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical leadership and medical oversight for the Palliative Care Program.
  • Deliver direct palliative care services to patients in the home and appropriate clinical settings.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to Palliative Care physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Monitor provider performance, quality metrics, documentation, utilization, risk coding, and HEDIS measures.
  • Conduct chart reviews and ensure appropriate documentation, care planning, and quality standards.
  • Develop and review clinical policies, guidelines, protocols, and performance standards.
  • Participate in physician recruitment, onboarding, performance reviews, education, and professional development.
  • Oversee clinical peer review and quality-improvement initiatives.
  • Review and sign DNR orders and provide timely clinical consultation.
  • Provide oversight of opioid and controlled-substance prescribing and participate in opioid-use reviews.
  • Participate in ER and inpatient utilization reviews and identify opportunities to reduce avoidable hospitalizations.
  • Ensure appropriate goals-of-care discussions and a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
  • Review and address clinical complaints, adverse events, and patient-safety concerns.
  • Support accreditation, regulatory compliance, infection control, emergency preparedness, and quality initiatives.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, interdisciplinary care meetings, education, research, and program-development activities.
  • Maintain availability to leadership and providers for clinical consultation, including urgent matters that may arise outside standard business hours.
Qualifications Required
  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
  • Unrestricted Florida medical license.
  • Specialized training and experience in Palliative Care through completion of a Hospice and/or Palliative Care Fellowship and/or previous experience as a Hospice or Palliative Care Medical Director.
Preferred
  • Board certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
  • Board certification in a primary care specialty such as Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
  • At least two years of experience as a Palliative Care Specialist or completion of a Palliative Care/Hospice fellowship.
  • Previous Medical Director experience.
  • Experience working with multicultural patient populations.
  • Experience delivering high-quality, patient-centered, and cost-effective care.
