Orthoptist

Tufts Medical Center is seeking an Orthoptist to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team in a patient-focused, academic medical setting. The Orthoptist will assess and manage disorders of binocular vision and eye movement, perform specialized diagnostic testing, assist ophthalmologists in treatment planning, and provide patient and family education. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, participate in teaching and quality improvement, and support clinical research initiatives. Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive orthoptic evaluations, including assessment of ocular motility, binocular vision, sensory and motor fusion, and stereopsis for pediatric and adult patients.
• Measure and document ocular deviations, amblyopia, and related visual disorders using standardized orthoptic and ophthalmic testing protocols.
• Implement and monitor non-surgical treatment plans such as prism correction, occlusion therapy, and orthoptic exercises, in collaboration with ophthalmologists and other providers.
• Participate in pre- and post-operative assessment and management of patients undergoing strabismus and related ocular surgeries.
• Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatment options, home therapy instructions, and the importance of adherence to follow-up care.
• Accurately document clinical findings, assessments, and treatment plans in the electronic medical record while supporting efficient patient flow in a busy clinic setting.
• Collaborate closely with ophthalmologists, residents, fellows, optometrists, technicians, and other team members to deliver coordinated, patient-centered care.
• Adhere to hospital policies, infection control standards, and patient safety protocols in all clinical activities.
• Contribute to clinical research and quality improvement initiatives by assisting with data collection, protocol adherence, and outcome tracking as needed.
• Support the academic mission of Tufts Medical Center by participating in the teaching and orientation of trainees and staff regarding orthoptic assessment and management.

Required Skills

• Orthoptic assessment of binocular vision and ocular motility
• Measurement and documentation of strabismus, amblyopia, and related disorders
• Performing and interpreting sensory and motor fusion tests
• Conducting visual field and acuity testing, including pediatric protocols
• Use of prisms, occlusion therapy, and orthoptic exercise programs
• Pre- and post-operative assessment of strabismus surgery patients
• Working within multidisciplinary ophthalmology and pediatric teams
• Electronic medical record (EMR) documentation and data accuracy
• Patient and family education on treatment plans and eye conditions
• Basic ocular pharmacology related to orthoptic practice
• Clinical research data collection and protocol adherence
