RN Charge

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) seeks an experienced RN Charge to lead and coordinate nursing care within our Healthcare & Medical Services department. The RN Charge will oversee daily unit operations, provide clinical guidance, support and mentor staff, ensure safe, high-quality patient care, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team. Responsibilities

• Serve as the on-shift clinical leader and primary resource nurse, coordinating and overseeing daily operations of the nursing unit.
• Assign and adjust nursing staff workload and patient assignments to ensure safe, high-quality, and equitable patient care.
• Provide direct patient care using evidence-based practice, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing interventions.
• Support and mentor bedside nurses, new graduates, and ancillary staff through coaching, real-time feedback, and role modeling of professional practice.
• Collaborate closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, therapists, case managers, and other interdisciplinary team members to develop and execute patient care plans.
• Monitor patient flow, including admissions, transfers, and discharges, to optimize bed utilization and throughput in a fast-paced academic medical center.
• Promote a culture of safety by identifying, reporting, and helping to resolve safety concerns, near-misses, and incidents, and by reinforcing adherence to policies and protocols.
• Participate in and often lead quality improvement, patient experience, and evidence-based practice initiatives aligned with MUSC's mission of innovation and excellence.
• Facilitate effective communication across shifts, including leading huddles and contributing to handoff reports to ensure continuity of care.
• Engage with patients and families to provide education, address concerns, and support shared decision-making and culturally competent care.
• Support an inclusive, collaborative work environment that reflects MUSC's commitment to diversity, respect, and community engagement.
• Assist nurse leaders with orientation of new staff, performance feedback, and identification of staff education and development needs.
• Ensure appropriate use and stewardship of unit resources, including supplies, equipment, and staffing, while maintaining regulatory and accreditation standards.
