JOB SUMMARY
The Genetic Counselor provides expert clinical counseling, risk assessment, and education to patients and families with known or suspected genetic conditions. This role supports informed decision?making by interpreting genetic test results, assessing inherited risk, and explaining diagnostic, prognostic, and treatment implications. The Genetic Counselor works collaboratively with physicians and interdisciplinary clinical teams to integrate genetic insights into patient care across inpatient and outpatient hospital settings while maintaining the highest standards of ethical and patient?centered practice.
JOB FUNCTIONS
JOB FUNCTIONS
• Conduct comprehensive patient and family history assessments to evaluate genetic risk.
• Provide pre-test and post-test genetic counseling to patients and families.
• Interpret and explain genetic test results in a clear, compassionate manner.
• Assists patients and families with understanding genetic disorders in their families, probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, medical recommendations from the geneticist and recurrence risks.
• Discusses benefits and limitations of genetic testing options.
• Obtains informed consent for interested patients.
• Develop and document follow-up recommendations for patients.
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary teams to coordinate care.
• Document patient interactions, risk assessments, and care plans accurately.
• Provide emotional support and appropriate referrals.
• Stay current with advances in genetics, genomics, and counseling practices.
• Assist in program development, outreach, and patient education initiatives.
• Coordinates and supports the execution of research of protocol as needed, including recruitment and assessment of research subjects and provision of patient advice and support.
• Ensure compliance with ethical, legal, and privacy standards.

QUALIFICATIONS


Education

  • Master's Degree Genetic Counseling or directly equivalent discipline. Required

    Licenses and Certifications
  • CGC - Certified Genetic Counselor. . . Required

    Work Experience
  • 1-3 years. 1 yr experience in healthcare setting. Required
  • 1-3 years. Experience in oncology or genetic counseling. Preferred

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Proficient in utilization of EMR and office programs
  • Strong oral and written communication
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Organizational and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
