The Hospital Paramedic functions under the administrative guidance of the shift supervisor or manager to provide services to emergency patients. Under the clinical direction of the Emergency Department Physician, collects and conveys information to physician and licensed nurse regarding the health status of patients.

Provides care in accordance with established policies and procedures of OU Health.
Carries out treatment plan in collaboration with the patient, the patient’s family, and members of the healthcare team.
Maintains clear communication with attending physician and licensed nurse assigned to patient about all patient care issues.
Observes and report patients' signs or symptoms.
Contributes information to the licensed nurse for the development and modification of the patient's plan of care.
Assists the licensed nurse in delivering and documenting care provided to the patient.
Provides for patient safety.
Maintains competence with charting.
Takes vital signs.
Measures and records patients’ input and output.
Attaches oxygen and cardiac monitor and monitors patients’ cardiac rhythm, performs 12 Lead EKG acquisition, documents EKG strips, suctions patients’ airways as directed and within competency, and reports findings to physician and care team assigned to patient.
Receives patients from EMS personnel and prepares patients for the physician's care.
Collects routine laboratory specimens as directed by the physician.
Performs basic laboratory procedures.
Establishment of peripheral intravenous (IV), intraosseous (IO) lines, and ultrasound guided IVs.
Performs venipunctures and insertion and removal of peripheral intravenous catheters from extremities.
Administers medications, including those permitted within the paramedic scope of licensure, in accordance with hospital policy, established clinical protocols, and under the authorization and direction of the supervising physician or medical director.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Paramedic Training Program required.
Experience: 2 years of hospital and/or pre-hospital experience providing immediate stabilization and transport of sick and injured patients required.
License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s):
Paramedic License issued by the State of Oklahoma required.
Paramedic Certification issued by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) required within 3 months.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) required within 3 months.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic hospital policies and procedures.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to type accurately.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with emphasis on providing customer service to internal and external customers.
Good computer skills with familiarity and/or ability to learn Microsoft Office, Teletracking, and other software applications.
Knowledge of commonly used hospital based computer programs.
Ability to relay information accurately and concisely.
Ability to work closely with multiple disciplines in the healthcare setting.
Ability to successfully handle multiple tasks.
