Location/Department: Oncology

Part time - 48 hours per pay period

Job Summary:

Provides direct nursing care to each patient as needed in assigned area & access individual needs of the patient & the family members. Provide quality patient care & educational needs in accordance with physician instructions, hospital policies, nursing skills & practices that have been established. Administers all chemotherapeutic treatments given to patients under the direction of the physician. Performs venipuncture for blood transfusions, IV infusions, lab tests, etc, as designated.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates a fundamental knowledge of cancer disease processes, complications, drug treatments & side effects.
  • Works with the Nurse Navigator, Patient Support Coordinator & oncology team to identify patients that need assistance with barriers such as lack of insurance, financial issues, disability needs, need for personal support, language barriers, & any other problems that may arise during cancer treatment.
  • Provide education on disease, treatment, & symptom management to cancer patients as needed
  • Assists physician during examinations, procedures & treatments.
  • Coordinates patient care under the direction of the physician.
  • Handles patient phone calls relating to disease, treatment & the management of side effects. (Under the direction of the physician.)
  • Administers medications, special treatments & other nursing services as prescribed, per policy.
  • Applies & removes dressings as required, , inserts catheters, attache pumps, etc.
  • Reports pertinent patient information to the appropriate persons.
  • Maintains accurate & complete records on the condition, treatment & medication of each patient as well as the patient’s response to treatment.
  • Keeps up-to-date with modern nursing techniques & practices.
  • Assists in analyzing & evaluating the type of nursing care required in the various nursing areas, makes recommendations for improvements to oncology nursing staff.
  • Disposes of chemotherapy waste in safe manner & demonstrates understanding of chemotherapy disposal procedures.
  • Performs venipuncture, sets up & starts IV infusions, including chemotherapy & blood products. Monitors & discontinues IV infusions, maintains accurate record of patient’s condition during infusion. Initiates emergency action when necessary. Performs venipuncture for blood specimen collection, labeling of tubes & appropriate disposition of specimens.
  • Responsible for knowing where the crash cart & code blue procedure are located.
  • Maintains BLS certification.
  • Assists other physicians who may utilize space at The Cancer Center with patient care needs including scheduling.
  • Adheres to policies related to blood transfusions & phlebotomies done at the Cancer Center.
  • Works with venous access lines (infusaports, Hickman lines, etc.). Must be willing to educate self on use of new devices as needed.
  • Maintains competency in nursing skills & knowledge.
  • Treats patients & family members, guests, health care team members & other associates with care, comfort & compassion. Consistently anticipates the needs of customers & puts those needs first. Demonstrates commitment to service & contributes to creating a positive, caring environment.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of radiation protocols & coordination of care for the radiation patient.
  • Assumes accountability & responsibility for individual nursing judgments as actions.
  • Adheres to MMH’s privacy policy which includes verbal, written, computer generated, computer accessed, filmed & recorded information related to patients, their family & visitors, staff, physicians & clients. Responsible for the protection of confidentiality of data at all times.
  • Directs activities of new nursing team members & student nurses during their days of observation.
  • Checks & maintains an adequate level of supplies in the area, performs inventory of supplies as scheduled or assigned.
  • Performs duties of other nursing personnel when necessary & performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.   
  • Licensed Registered Nurse by the Indiana State Board of Nursing.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in Oncology preferred.
  • Maintains OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) Certification or becomes OCN certified within 3 years of employment dependent upon hour worked to mee the requirements.
  • Must become chemo certified within 1 year of hire. 

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Work requires frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, use of hands and talking; occasional sitting, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling & reaching.    
  • Occasionally may need to lift up to 25lbs.

Associate degree in Nursing or better in Nursing.
