Location/Department:  Hospital - Med Surg, OB, ER & Surgery (Rotation)

PRN

Job Summary:

To provide basic nursing care to Med Surg/SCA patients of all age populations.

 Supervisory Responsibilities:  None

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Uses 2 patient identifiers before giving treatments, passing meal trays or obtaining specimens. 
  • Provides treatments as ordered in a timely and appropriate manner and documents in EHR to patient in all age ranges. 
  • Rounds on Patients at a minimum of every 2 hours or more frequently as indicated. 
  • Responds to call lights promptly.
  • Takes vital signs including BP, T, RR, and HR as ordered and documents timely in EHR.
  • Weighs patients using appropriate technique and documents timely in EHR. 
  •  Records Intake and Output throughout the shift and document timely in EHR. 
  • Assists with or bathes patient with privacy and documents timely in EHR. 
  • Provides AM care as needed and documents timely in EHR. 
  • Provides HS care as needed and documents timely in EHR. 
  • Passes, sets up and collects meal trays timely and documents timely in EHR.
  • Assists patients with meals as needed. 
  • Passes snacks/nutritional supplements and refreshes ice/water at least once per 8-hour shift.
  • Assists with walking, turning, transferring using appropriate technique and documents timely in EHR. Encourages patients to "Get Up"
  • Utilizes the correct bed type per patient admission status. 
  • Performs active or passive ROM using appropriate technique and documents timely in EHR. 
  • Applies medical equipment using appropriate technique and documents timely in EHR. 
  • Sets up patient's room for admission. Performs admission tasks. 
  • Takes patients to car when discharged in wheelchair or as otherwise indicated. 
  •  Transfers patients to other locations as directed, such as Surgery, Radiology or unit to unit transfer. 
  • Package up patient's belongings for discharge or transfer.
  • Care of patient after death. 
  • Uses 2 patient identifiers before giving treatments, illustrates process. 
  • Reassess patient in response to changes in condition after intervention and as needed and reports to RN.
  •  Provides education to patients and family and reports to RN.
  • Accurately takes and records appropriate vital signs and weights. 
  • Accurately takes and records intake and output.
  • Places patient on monitor and records rhythm strip appropriately. 
  • Performs and records clinical skills such as Foley catheter insertion, D/C IVs, Glucometer, etc. safely and accurately (in collaboration with RN).
  • Assist patient, RN and Physician with procedures, exams, etc. 
  • Transports patient on arrival, discharge, and to units timely and safely.
  • Collects specimens accurately and timely, including labeling specimens correctly. 
  •  Demonstrates knowledge of and uses equipment appropriately and safely.
  • Demonstrates awareness of patient rights. 
  • Understands the spiritual aspects of patient care and can give examples of such. 
  •  Uses respect and dignity when dealing with death and dying. 
  • Aware of ethics committee if needed and knows how to address any ethical issues. 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrates excellent communication & organization skills.
  • Detail oriented & able to multi-task.
  • Able to operate basic office equipment & work on a computer.
  • Able to operate hospital beds, wheelchairs, IV pumps, & other general medical equipment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • No prior work experience required
  • Must be accepted into a nursing program

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent walking, standing, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, & use of hands
  • Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs

Associate degree in Nursing or better in Nursing.
