Assistant Nurse Manager

Job Description

This is a new role for us! In the Assistant Nurse Manager role, you will play a key role in the department to with the management of the patient care department by supporting daily operations, staff development, quality improvement initiatives, and patient safety efforts. This position works under the direction of the Nurse Director and in collaboration with interdisciplinary leaders to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care.

Location: Anacortes, WA, Onsite
Schedule: Full Time / 40 hours per week
Salary: $47.69/hr - $71.53/hr

You will provide leadership support for clinical staff, contributes to performance management and staff engagement, and supports operational alignment with Island Hospital’s mission, values, and strategic goals. This position may provide direct patient care as needed to support departmental operations and maintain clinical expertise and may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to Washington State law.

What you will be doing:

  • Assists the Nurse Director with the operational management of the department, including staffing oversight, workflow coordination, and daily problem-solving.
  • Supports staff performance management, including participation in hiring, onboarding, coaching, counseling, and annual performance evaluations.
  • Promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement in alignment with Island Hospital standards.
  • Supports and coordinates quality improvement initiatives, patient safety activities, and regulatory compliance efforts.
  • Assists with staff education and development, including orientation, competency validation, and unit-based education initiatives.
  • Serves as a clinical and operational resource for staff, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Participates in investigation and follow-up of patient safety events and incident reports, providing staff coaching as appropriate.
  • Supports staff scheduling and staffing adjustments to meet patient care and operational needs.
  • Maintains a safe, therapeutic, and efficient patient care environment.
  • May function as a preceptor or mentor for clinical staff and emerging leaders.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed to maintain clinical competence and support staffing needs.
  • At the discretion of department operational and patient care needs, may be required to work rotating schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to support a 24/7 patient care environment.
  • Demonstrates regular, reliable, and punctual attendance as an essential function of the role.

  • Ability to support and reinforce organizational standards, policies, and professional practice expectations.

Your Qualifications:

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington.
  • Current BLS certification; additional certifications as required by department.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of acute care or intensive care nursing experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), preferred.
  • Prior charge nurse, coordinator, or informal leadership experience, preferred.
  • Experience in quality improvement or staff education activities, preferred.
