Summary

The Medical Laboratory Intern is responsible for expeditious and accurate performance of routine clinical laboratory tests and basic clinical laboratory functions.

General Hours of Work

  • Day Shift, 8 hour shifts

Education and/or Experience

  • Must be enrolled in an approved NAACLS schooling for MLS or MLT degree

Essential Functions

  • Performs basic supply inventory, calibration, reagent preparation, quality control checks and preventative maintenance steps on assigned instrumentation.  Initiates, follows-through with and documents basic trouble shooting of equipment as necessary within established guidelines, or requests assistance.
  • Accurately performs routine tests and specimen collection utilizing established protocol.
  • Communicates laboratory data and pertinent technical information to appropriate departments and individuals in an accurate and timely fashion.  Includes verbal as well as electronic means.
  • Accurately performs basic to complex clinical laboratory tests utilizing theoretical knowledge and independent judgment.
  • Distinguishes results of tests as being normal, abnormal or unusual.  Recognizes test inconsistencies and take appropriate corrective action.  Calls critical test results to appropriate personnel immediately according to established protocol.  Also assesses the validity of results which appear unusual or which may differ significantly from previous results or expected values.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
