Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
The Echo Cardiac Ultrasound Supervisor at North Mississippi Health Services, Heart Institute, has several key responsibilities. They oversee echocardiography procedures, coordinate activities for Echocardiography Sonographers, schedule staff, ensure staff's continued education, maintain ICAEL Accreditation, collaborate with cardiologists to implement new procedures, assist in performance evaluations, and manage equipment maintenance. As a supervisor, this role oversees and guides a team of employees to ensure efficient task completion, promoting teamwork and effective coordination.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Clinical:

  • The incumbent performs all aspects of echocardiography. (M-mode: 2-Dimensional; Spectral Color Flow Doppler, Stress Echocardiography; assists with Transesophageal Echocardiography; and assists with Cardiac Biopsy).
  • Coordinates the activities for the Echocardiography Sonographers, i.e., work assignments and distribution of workflow.
  • Responsible for all areas of Echocardiography including Adult and Pediatric populations: Main Unit, and Women’s Center echo area, .
  • Responsible for scheduling of staff and maintaining coverage in all areas of Echocardiography.
  • Responsible for ensuring all staff maintain Continued Education and learn new procedures.
  • Must work closely with all NMMC managers to ensure Best practices.
  • Works closely with Cardiologists to keep ECHO Lab state of the art with new procedures and research participation.
  • Maintains ICAEL Accreditation, has quarterly QI meetings and monthly educational meetings with staff and physicians.
  • Works closely with Structural Heart Manager helping with problem solving, development of new areas and new procedures across Cardiovascular Servies.
  • Assists in performance evaluations and recommending disciplinary action when warranted.
  • Responsible for the orientation of professional and technical personnel with regards to ultrasound techniques and procedures to be used in the laboratory.
  • Organize and carry out training of professional and technical personnel with regards to ultrasound techniques and procedures to be used in the laboratory.
  • Assists the  Structural HeartManager in the preparation and maintenance of the departmental budget.
  • Assist in the update and development of techniques, policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for assuring that all equipment required to complete Echocardiography procedures is in proper working order, maintain monthly maintenance of equipment, and uses problem solving skills to identify system errors.
  • Perform cardiac ultrasound studies for acquired heart disease.
  • Properly identify and detect abnormalities of valves, chambers, great vessels and any related structures, recognize the physiologic effects of the disease process.
  • Perform ultrasound examination in accordance with the standards and nomenclature established for M-mode, Two-Dimensional Echocardiography.
  • Properly identify M-mode recording; mark and measure M-modes for physicians. Analyze two-dimensional study utilizing equipment’s internal analysis package and properly measure structures.
    Clerical:
  • Responsible for proper charting, filing, and charging of all Echocardiography procedures performed.
  • Responsible for Computerized Patient Scheduling on an as needed basis.
    Inventory:
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of supplies needed for procedures performed.
    Performance Inventory:
  • ?Participates in hospital and departmental on-going Performance Improvement activities and complies with actions taken as a result of those activities to assure high quality patient care.




    QUALIFICATIONS


    Education
  • Associate's Degree The incumbent must a registered cardiac sonographer and should be a graduate of an accredited ultrasound program, which included training in cardiac ultrasound.. Required

    Licenses and Certifications
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support
  • ACLS
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support
  • ARDMS - Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • ARDMS - Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • CCI - Cardiovascular Credentialing Internation

    Work Experience
  • 1-3 years. 3 years of clinical experience in cardiac ultrasound. Required

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • This position required detailed knowledge of cardiac anatomy, cardiac disease processes and the effect of these disease processes on the cardiac structures and blood flow.
  • The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to perform detailed measurements and calculations in order to define disease states.
  • This position requires knowledge and use of computerized ultrasound and electrocardiographic equipment
  • Teaching skills and understanding of all aspects of cardiac ultrasound
  • The incumbent deals mainly with the pediatric, adult, and geriatric population.
  • Must be able to work independently of supervision when on location.
  • The incumbent is able to fill-in for others within the Cardiology Department when needed or directed by the Manager. This requires a good teamwork focus.
  • Commitment to customer service and cost control.
  • Close patient and physician interaction is needed due to the complexity of equipment and the sensitivity of data collected
  • Participates in structured teaching program for cardiac ultrasound, adult/pediatric care
  • Cardiology patients and their families
  • Cardiologists, Cardiologists= nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and the Cardiology Department staff and NMMC staff at large
  • Referral physicians and the office staff of referring physicians
  • Key human relation skills needed; positive attitude, good communication skills, and a functional teamwork concept
