Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Pre-analytical Specimen Processing
Demonstrates proficiency in determining specimen requirements blood collections for all age groups, order entry, order query, specimen accessioning, and specimen distributions.
Sorts all samples to allow for fast retrieval
Proficient in collecting blood successfully on difficult patients
Utilizes two forms of patient identification.
Evaluates and processes all lab specimens according to specimen acceptability policy.
Analytic testing
Accurately performs laboratory analyses on patient specimens.
Verifies completed work only after careful review of order priority, completeness, absurd results, critical values and special requests.
Quality Control
Performs quality control testing as required for each analyte.
Ensures that results pass quality control criteria before verifying results.
Participates in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Brings forward quality concerns and issues in a timely manner following the proper chain of command
Instrument Maintenance
Skillfully performs required instrumentation maintenance so that analyzers will perform optimally over a longer period of time.
Documents all entries.
Documents all problems and report them to supervisor.
STAT Testing Turnaround Times
Recognizes STAT testing priorities.
Turnaround times shall not exceed established limits defined in the Laboratory STAT Testing Policy.
Accuracy of Results
Reviews results for critical values, delta variances, unusual or absurd results, and result completeness prior to certification and release of information.
Always telephones critical results to clinician.
Obtains read back and documents
LIS Proficiency
Maximally utilizes the features of the LIS system to enable productive and efficient use of time.
Report problems encountered to Information Services Department to allow for times resolution.
Minimum Education:
A bachelor’s degree is required in medical laboratory science or clinical laboratory science, or related biological science.
Required Licenses
ASCP certification or registry eligible required.

Anna Jaques Hospital is a 123 bed community hospital serving 17 cities and towns in the Merrimack Valley . The hospital offers a wide range of acute care services to meet the needs of our growing patient population including inpatient and outpatient surgery in fully digitized computerized operating room suites, cardiology including echocardiography and a cardiac cath lab, comprehensive cancer services, orthopedics, nuclear medicine, laboratory, noninvasive vascular lab, joint replacement program and birth center.
Programs include the number one wound center in the nation, a primary stroke service, and Level III Trauma Center . The hospitals Non Invasive Vascular laboratory was accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL).
For the second year in a row, the American Association for Respiratory Care awarded the hospital its Quality Respiratory Care Recognition. The hospital had no ventilator acquired pneumonia cases during the last year.
The Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center is the only such center to receive full accreditation from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) in Massachusetts .
