Before we dive into the top 5 hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery care, let’s find out how and why U.S. News and World Report ranks hospitals. For 2016-2017’s rankings, an initial pool of 4,667 hospitals were evaluated for 12 data-driven specialties — cardiology and heart surgery being one of them. An additional four specialities were ranked entirely on specialty physician surveys and reputation.
Across all 16 specialties, however, only 154 U.S. hospitals performed well enough to be nationally ranked in one or more specialties. Along with an eligible hospital’s reputation, patient survival rates and safety, and other care-related indicators, each specialty hospital had to meet a threshold number of patients treated (and discharged during 2012-2014) for their severe condition or complex procedure.
Cardiology and heart surgery specialty hospitals, for example, needed to have treated at least 1,333 patients, 500 of whom had to be surgical procedures.
With the 12 data-driven specialties, each hospital was given a score from 0 to 100, and the hospitals with the 50 highest scores were ranked on the following and with the following weight percentage: reputation with specialists (27.5%), survival (37.5%), patient safety (5%), other care-related indicators (30%).
