It’s no secret that the US is in the midst of its worse ever nursing shortage. To compound things, reports suggest that this crisis could continue until 2030. The fundamental problem is that there aren’t enough registered nurses to help with the growing demands of the healthcare system.

Consequently, hospitals around the country are doing all they can to encourage nurses to sign up. This includes introducing various nurse bonuses. Typically, these bonuses come in the form of signing-on bonuses. In essence, these bonuses can be used to boost your salary, meaning you earn more money. Today, we’re bringing you a list of the top twelve hospitals offering these bonuses right now.

This list has been composed of the best hospitals in terms of the size of the bonuses offered, combined with additional employee benefits and the general work culture. Feel free to browse through the list and apply for nursing jobs to get your bonus.

MaineHealth

MaineHealth currently offers one of the best nursing bonuses around. All New Grad Registered Nurses can enjoy a $5,000 sign-on bonus, while Registered Nurses with 1-3 years of experience will receive $10,000 in bonuses. If you have been a nurse for more than three years, you will be entitled to the $20,000 sign-on bonus.

The hospital offers great career opportunities, including a great 401k plan, insurance, additional education, and a chance for career progression. Unfortunately, the bonuses are only available for a limited time. As of writing this, MaineHealth has not stipulated when the end date will be. However, the job was only posted on 05/03/2022, so it is relatively new.

Monument Health

Experienced nurses have a chance to take advantage of a bonus of up to $40,000 from Monument Health. This has been funded by the South Dakota health system in a bid to reel more nurses to the hospital. It is important to note that these bonuses come with a time commitment attached. You will only receive it if you work for a minimum of two years at the hospital.

Furthermore, this nursing bonus is only for experienced nurses in both surgical services and the intensive care unit. If you have experience in either of these two domains, this could be a good hospital to consider. Monument Health is known for offering very competitive wage packages and supportive work culture. Employees also receive medical, vision, and dental coverage - along with a full retirement plan and health savings account. There are ample opportunities to grow as a nurse through this hospital, and it seems like a place that genuinely cares for its workers.

TriHealth

TriHealth is offering a nurse bonus for registered nurses with only one year of clinical experience in the field. This is one of the better places for an entry-level signing-on bonus. It is only up to $5,000, but that is still a good chunk of money to add to your regular wages.

Furthermore, the bonus is being offered to nurses for part-time positions. This means you will work 48 bi-weekly hours, so it’s a fantastic opportunity if you’re not interested in full-time work at this moment. Many hospitals are still struggling to find part-time nurses alongside full-time ones, so you will be able to see plenty of options with bonuses for part-time workers. Located in Cincinnati, the hospital has won numerous awards - including being recognized nine times as one of the 100 Best Companies for Working Moms.

The hospital stipulates that full repayment of the bonus will be required if employment is terminated before the two years have concluded.

Parkland Health and Hospital System

Parkland is one of the largest public hospital systems in the country. It is a big facility that sees loads of patients through its doors every single day. As the community hospital for Dallas, Parkland has a long tradition of providing exceptional care for the local community. Now, the hospital is also offering exceptional bonuses for nurses.

Amidst the current nursing shortage, Parkland is looking to entice registered nurses with a $15,000 signing-on bonus. It is not clear if this bonus is paid in a lump sum, but the chances are it will be paid periodically along with the rest of your wages.

NPMC

National Park Medical center is a care facility that currently provides service to a five-county area. It covers Garland, Hot Springs, Montgomery, Pike, and Clark counties. The bonus for this hospital is $5,000 and it is open to former employees of NPMC. If you were previously employed by the hospital - but more than 6 months have passed - you can apply for the role and get the bonus.

One of the advantages of this bonus is that you don’t require a massive amount of experience to claim it. The $5,000 can be yours if you have at least 1-2 years of experience working within a medical office environment or 2-3 years of customer service experience. However, these aren’t essential requirements, so you could be considered for the role if this is your first job application.

Spring View Hospital

This is exactly what you want to read from an employer before considering a role there. The hospital is currently running a nursing bonus program that gives you up to $10,000 when you sign on.

Taking a deeper look at the bonus, it’s one of the more unique offerings out there. You receive half of it after 90 days of employment, and then the other half after one year of working there. This injection of cash at two separate points can be highly beneficial for you. Aside from needing a Bachelor’s Degree from a School of Nursing, you also need to be licensed to work in the State of Kentucky. Other than that, no experience is essential, but 1-2 years is preferred.

Texas Health Hospital

Serving the growing areas of Rockwell County, Kaufman County, Hunt County, Eastern Dallas County, and Souther Collin County, Texas Health Hospital is a large institution with a growing need for registered nurses. Despite its size, the hospital is known for providing very personal levels of care. Indeed, it has won many awards, including recognition as a CMS 5-Star Hospital. This is a pretty impressive award as it is only handed out to around 10% of national hospitals that take part in the survey.

Regarding nurse's bonuses, Texas Health Hospital has a sign-on bonus of $10,000 for new Registered Nurses. A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred, with a minimum of 1 year’s experience required. Of course, you also need to hold a current Texas Nursing License to apply for this role - or you should have one coming as soon as possible when applying.

University of Michigan Hospitals

Widely regarded as one of the best hospitals to work for, the University of Michigan has a comprehensive bonus program for nurses - and all other new hires. Effectively, there are three different tiers of sign-on bonuses that you may be eligible for.

The first tier gives you up to $1,000 in the first 90 days of employment. However, this probably won’t affect nurses as you are typically classified as either Level 2 or Level 3 employees. As such, you can enjoy either the second or third bonus tiers. The second one provides up to $3,000 in the first year of employment, while the third gives you up to $10,000 in the first 18 months of employment. Depending on the severity of your role - and your experience - you may fall into either of those two categories.

What To Look For In Bonuses

As you can see from the list, all of the current nurse bonuses are handed out as ‘sign-on’ bonuses. Essentially, this means that you activate the bonus upon signing on for the role. Therefore, you could also be eligible for other bonuses during your tenure at the chosen hospital.

Nevertheless, there are two critical things to watch for before you agree to a bonus:

  • Payment - More specifically, how and when will you be paid the bonus? Some employers will divide the bonus up and add it to your regular pay package. Other employers will pay you the entire bonus as a lump sum, while some will split it into multiple lump-sum payments. Be sure you know how you’re going to earn your bonus so you aren’t taken by surprise.
  • Time periods - Most hospitals that provide bonuses for nurses will have a time period attached to them. Effectively, this means you have to work for a certain period to earn the bonus. In cases when you are given a lump sum of money, you either get the money after reaching this period or have to repay the bonus if you leave before the period ends.

Currently, there is no sign of the nursing crisis slowing down as many healthcare workers continue to leave the industry. There are jobs available, but not enough nurses to fill them. Hospitals are doing all they can to attract new talent to roles, and these nurse bonuses are a fantastic incentive. If you’re a Registered Nurse that’s looking for a new job, consider some of the hospitals on the list above.
