Summary
The LPN assists the registered nurse in the management and care of their assigned patients through direct patient care, nursing diagnosis, and patient teaching. This position participates in educational programs as an educator/consultant (if applicable).
The RN assists the Resource Nurse in the management and care of their assigned patients by means of direct patient care, nursing diagnosis, and patient teaching. Participate in educational programs as an educator/consultant (if applicable).
General Hours of Work
8 or 12 hour shift rotation (weekends, holidays and call rotation)
Education and/or Experience
Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing. No previous experience is required, but preferred. Certified as a Childbirth Educator and 3 years experience in postpartum (if applicable). Bi-lingual experience preferred but not required.
Certificate, Licenses, Registrations
Must have a current nurse license to practice in the State of Iowa. Must obtain and maintain professional certifications prior to working in the applicable areas:
Med Surg: ACLS, BLS
Essential Functions
Assists the registered nurse in the management and care of their assigned patients. Logs into Vocera adding room assignments, updates electronic white boards with patients assigned and individual patient information. Makes daily rounds and completes assessment.
Provides bedside care to patients, conducts hourly rounding and provides bedside report to oncoming staff.
Coordinates making physicians rounds and physician notifications with the Resource Nurse. Makes necessary observation and suggestions to attending physicians.
Liaison between patients, physicians, and staff. Knows the hospital and area resource services.
Administers medication and treatments per physician orders; counts, narcotics, administers IV therapy per policy and procedure but will not hang or monitor blood transfusions, or insert/adjust position of nasal gastric or oral pharyngeal tubes.
Reviews H & P, med, treatments, etc. Responsible for insurance cards in offices’ absences. Remains alert to the safety needs of patients, visitors, and fellow employees.
Coordinates acknowledging orders with the RN and following through with them. Records and documents all clinical and patient data. Assists RN with discharges and patient teaching for their shift and completes discharge routine documentation.
Communicates pertinent information to staff.
Displays proper care, utilization, and charging of supplies and equipment used.
Serves as an instructor for prenatal educational activities and collaborates with clinical leaders to assess, plan, implement and evaluate goals, objectives and content of educational programs (if applicable).
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
