Job Title: Health Unit Coordinator    

Department: Nursing

Salary Range: $18.66 - $26.18/hour, based on  experience and qualifications.

 

SUMMARY

Prepares and compiles records in patient care unit of the organization, serves as central communication source, and performs reception duties by performing the following duties.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responds to visitor, physician and staff requests in a timely manner.
  • Acts as the central focus for communication in the patient care unit for the members of the healthcare team, patients, and visitors.
  • Responsible for assisting in transcription process of physician's orders in a timely and organized manner.
  • Responsible and accountable for maintaining patients' charts current and in proper order with accurate identification on each form.
  • Maintains accurate, current data and documents in a variety of unit-related areas which may include, but may not be limited to: shift assignments sheets, census forms, patient charge sheets.
  • Inputs information electronically as required.
  • Answers the telephone in professional and efficient manner.  Records and delivers messages appropriately.
  • Respects patient confidentiality, supports the Patient Bill of Rights and HIPAA requirements.
  • Attends departmental meetings and inservice education programs as assigned to learn new forms, procedures, developmental skills, etc.
  • Supports the policies and procedures of the organization and the standards of the Joint Commission as required for full accreditation.
  • Demonstrates organization values in daily work.

Considers age-related factors in care, treatment, education, and evaluation of patients ranging from neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.  Applies knowledge of age-related factors appropriately in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies and procedures.

 

Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).  Familiarity with medical terminology and technical terms a plus.  Computer/clerical experience preferred.  On-the-job training provided.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to patients, visitors, physicians, and other employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.  Good public relation skills.  Ability to deal with many departments.
